Bylaws of the Colorado School of Mines Chapter of American Chemical Society Student Members

 

Article I. Name

 

The name of the organization shall be the Colorado School of Mines Chapter of American Chemical Society Student Members.

 

Article II. Objects

 

The objects of this chapter shall be to afford the opportunity for students of a chemical science to become better acquainted, to secure the intellectual stimulation that arises from professional association, to obtain experience in preparing and presenting technical material before chemical audiences, to foster a professional spirit among members, to instill pride in the chemical sciences, and to foster an awareness of the responsibilities and challenges of the modern chemist.

 

Article III. Membership

 

The membership of this organization shall be composed of student and associate members of the American Chemical Society as well as those individuals regularly participating in organization functions including but not limited to recruitment, outreach, and business events. No dues must be paid to the organization, but members are encouraged to pay for membership in the national organization.

 

Article IV. Officers

 

The officers of this chapter shall be a President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Magic Show Committee Chair, and Study Sessions Chair. These shall constitute the executive committee.

 

Officers shall be elected at the last regularly scheduled meeting of the academic year from members nominated by the floor. They shall take office on the first regularly scheduled chapter meeting of the following academic year and hold office until their successors are duly elected.

 

Article V. Duties of Officers

 

The responsibilities and duties of the officers shall be outlined to any nominee for office. All members have the opportunity to view officer responsibilities and move for impeachment of any officer not fulfilling the responsibilities of his/her elected office.

 

  1. President

The duties of the President shall be: to preside over all meetings, to officially represent the chapter, complete the national chapter report annually, and to perform other duties as deemed necessary
 

  1. Vice President

The duties of the Vice President shall be: to preside in the absence of the president, to procure meeting and event space when necessary, attend Board of Student Organization meetings, and aid the president however possible.

 

  1. Secretary

The duties of the Secretary shall be: to record all chapter business, inform members and faculty of upcoming meetings and events, and initiate or reply to correspondence on behalf of the group.

 

  1. Treasurer

The duties of the treasurer shall be: to be responsible for all chapter finances including but not limited to food orders for meetings and events, and the completion of necessary field purchase orders, reimbursement, and budget request forms.

 

  1. Magic Show Committee Chair

The duties of the Magic Show Committee Chair shall be: Lead the Magic Show Committee in planning, preparing chemicals, running if necessary, and cleaning up for all magic show events. Magic show events are coordinated with the chemistry department faculty, any other duties and responsibilities deemed necessary by the officers collectively.

 

  1. Study Session Chair

The duties of the Study Session Chair shall be: Organize and run to the best of their ability the organic chemistry study sessions, and other study sessions the chapter deem needed.

 

All Officers must be National Members. In addition to the duties listed above, the officers shall have access to a Drop Box (www.dropbox.com) folder for all electronic records held by the chapter, and a physical folder that is held by one of the faculty advisers of the chapter for all hard copy documents.

 

Article VI. Faculty Advisor

 

The Chapter at its annual election the chapter shall select as its Faculty Advisor a member of the faculty who is a member of the American Chemical Society, whose duties shall be to advise the chapter both in its local activities and in its relations with the national organization as well as national and university policies. The advisor shall be kept informed of all chapter proceedings.

 

Article VII. Professional Advisor

At its annual election, the chapter may select a Professional Advisor. The Professional Advisor shall be a member of the National Organization, employed by industry, and unaffiliated with the university. The Professional Advisor shall act as a liaison between the chapter and professional chemists and assist the chapter with arranging speakers, community events, site tours, and involvement with the local section.

 

Article VIII. Meetings

 

  1. Business Meetings

Meetings shall be held bimonthly. The day and time of business meetings shall be determined by the executive committee by the first organizational meeting of the semester.

 

  1. Special Meetings

Special meetings may be held as the president deems necessary to resolve unfinished business, make further arrangements for an upcoming event, etc.

 

  1. Events

The chapter shall host a minimum of four events each academic year. The chapter must host at least one recruitment and one service event. Other events may include but shall not be limited to: chapter social events, presentations given by students, faculty, or members of industry, tours of labs or plants, and social events with other campus or community organizations.

 

Article IX. Non-Discrimination

 

The organization in conjunction with the Associated Students of the Colorado School of Mines, confirms its support of the principles and practices of non-discrimination and equality regardless of race, religion, sex, age, sexual orientation, or physical handicap, in its employment and in all of its programs, activities, and opportunities

Article X. Dues

 

The annual national dues of student members shall be sent by each individual to the national organization or may be submitted by the chapter Treasurer.

 

Article XI. Amendments

 

Amendments to the bylaws shall be submitted for chapter approval one meeting prior to voting. Bylaws may be amended by a two thirds written vote of the active members and must conform to Both university guidelines and the regulations established by the national organization for student members.
